Project objectives:
- Develop sustainable insect-based proteins as an alternative to current animal proteins for human food. The sustainable insect-based proteins aim to supplement the vegetable proteins’ offer currently available thus diversifying the proteins intakes in human nutrition
- Validate insect-based proteins for human food applications with regards to the EU regulation on novel food through the realisation of all required R&D tests such as digestibility, bioavailability, toxicity,…;
- Explore potential health related properties of insect proteins, such anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic or prebiotic activities.
- Create new market applications for insect-based proteins focusing on human sport nutrition to replace current animal -based food proteins for sport applications through providing anew source of non-animal proteins able to partially substitute the vegetable proteins in human nutrition. The project seeks to demonstrate that insect-based proteins in sport applications respect human food quality and regulatory standards, being safe and offering equivalent or superior nutritive properties than current animal/vegetable proteins used in the sport market.
