Through the European funding program for research and innovation, Horizon 2020, research organisations and companies can access a budget of almost 80 billion Euro in total. The funding programme strongly focuses on results. Entrepreneurs now have more of a chance to receive funding for the development and demonstration of groundbreaking innovations!
The three 'flagships' or research priorities of Horizon 2020
The themes the EU considers important, and for which numerous grants will become available over the period 2014 - 2020, have been divided into three subcategories called 'flagships' or research priorities.
1) Tackling Societal Challenges: this pillar of Horizon 2020 includes a broad range of themes for which grants are or will be made available. The focus is on achieving results in the following fields:
- health, demographic change and well-being
- food security and the bioeconomy
- secure, clean efficient energy
- smart, green and integrated transport
- availability of raw materials
- resource efficiency and climate action
- inclusive, innovative and secure societies
2) Creating Industrial Leadership and Competitive Frameworks: compared to the pillar above, Horizon 2020 is much more specific about the areas and technologies for which funding will be available:
- ICT
- Nanotechnologies, materials, manufacturing and processing industry
- Biotechnology
- Space
3) Excellence in Science Base: fundamental research remains an important pillar within the European funding programme. This is reflected in the following areas of Horizon 2020:
- Frontier research (ERC)
- Future and emerging technologies (FET)
- Skills and career development (Marie Curie)
- Research infrastructure
