The European Union is introducing stricter regulations on food packaging, leading to significant changes in supermarkets in the coming years. Packaging will become simpler, less colorful, and in many cases, transparent, with a strong push toward reusable and recyclable solutions. By 2030, all packaging must be sustainable and compliant with new environmental standards. However, this transition could impact the shelf life of food products, making it essential for consumers to be more aware to help reduce food waste.
The MICROORC project, funded under Horizon Europe, is working to develop innovative solutions that ensure the quality of packaged food while using more sustainable materials. The research focuses on preventing food spoilage and waste by leveraging advanced microbiome applications across the entire food supply chain. These new regulations may also lead to higher packaging production costs, potentially affecting product prices and the variety of goods available in supermarkets. The changes will be gradually implemented starting in 2025, marking a significant step toward a more sustainable future for the agri-food sector.
In recent years, CiaoTech - Gruppo PNO has significantly strengthened its position as a European leader in innovation management and access to public funding. As the partner responsible for exploitation and dissemination activities in the MICROORC project, CiaoTech will carry out advanced technology intelligence studies and market analysis, along with extensive dissemination initiatives. This strategic approach aims to accelerate the adoption of new solutions in agri-food systems, reaffirming CiaoTech’s role as a key ally in European partnerships for the promotion of innovation, research, and development in the sector.
