While electrification of the primary mining sector is much more challenging, there is more optimism surrounding the electrification of production processes from secondary resources. By implementing innovative electrochemical processes in metal recycling and upcycling, Europe can make substantial progress by 2050. The FIREFLY project is developing groundbreaking technologies in this direction, especially targeting spent-, and off-specifications catalysts, by streamlining processing - by direct recycling and upcycling.
